At some point or another everyone needs to reinvent themselves – I certainly have had to a few times! Sometimes, it’s by choice and other times it’s not. Either way, we need to embrace it and look forward to a new career journey.
I see 5 steps to this reinvention process called developing a personal brand. I was hesitant to embrace this at first, I thought a personal brand was only for a celebrity so it obviously didn’t apply to me, WRONG! Your personal brand is YOU – you’ve been developing your brand your entire life. One of the big questions is, is your current brand working for you or against you. (crickets….)
Odds are, if you are honest with yourself you know the answer. Reinvent yourself for THE opportunity you want, that will: 1) make you more money; 2) reduce your stress; 3) help you enjoy your work day; 4) be a deserved promotion; or 5) whatever else you want from the next step.
That brings me to Step 1. which is Goal Setting: Determine what your goals are which includes financial, professional, health-related, geographic location, industry… You get the idea. This is arguably the hardest part of the 5 Step process. Don’t take it lightly!!!
If you’ve read my blog before you know I set a meGoal (meaningful + exciting = focused, not selfish) to increase the likelihood of my success. If that works for you go for it, if not make sure you set a goal(s) that you are passionate about and will push you forward as you work to achieve it.
The next is Step 2. determine Your Timeline. If you are in transition or in a position that has a short shelf-life your timeline is probably within the next 30 days. If you are in a ‘stable’ position now and thinking about a transition your timeline is probably closer to 6-12 months. Your timeline will drive how quickly you need to move through the steps to reach your goal.
Do you know what makes you unique? Of course you do, that’s Step 3. Branding! These are the qualities and traits that are your ‘best of’, hopefully why your friends are your friends and why your family trusts & loves you.
Write down your top 5 Best Of Me in the Workplace – this will get you started on branding. Obviously, your resume, cover letters, and YOU need to reflect this brand consistently when you apply for jobs, go to networking events, have a phone interview and are sitting in front of a potential future employer.
So make sure your ‘Best Of Me’ represent you. If you want to be someone different, then you need to make changes and that’s part of the goal setting process (go back to Step 1).
I believe in spending money when you need to, however this isn’t a Marketing plan that necessarily needs a budget. Step 4. Guerilla Marketing methods & Step 5. Social Media. You’ll need to have: 1) identified which social media you ‘should’ be on (going back to your goal); 2) social media skills to network with potential employers and grow your contacts; and 3) time to be on social media.
If you don’t have a clue about social media but realize you ‘should’ be out there then you need to find someone to train you (I’m offering FREE LinkedIn & Twitter webinars in May).
I hope this checklist and steps help you start thinking about your personal brand and why it’s critical to understand and have it as part of your career strategy.
